UK Government Levelling Up White Paper
02/01/2022On 2nd February 2022, the UK Government published its flagship Levelling Up White Paper. The document pledges to ‘end the geographical inequality’ in the U.K. by ‘giving everyone the opportunity to flourish’. It outlines twelve missions to unlock the ‘potential of every place and person across the UK’, including: boosting pay and employment; bolstering transport links; strengthening broadband connections; improving the quality of education and skills training; narrowing the gap in Health Life Expectancy; improving wellbeing in every area; increase in culture engagement; home ownership; re-empowering local authorities; devolution within England; investment into Research and Development; and crime reduction .
Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities unveiled the White Paper as proof of the government ‘firing up every engine of the economy’. However, the Labour Party has denounced the document as a ‘repackaged, rehashed and recycled’ set of policies from the Conservative Party’s 2019 manifesto.
